# 1.5 (b) Turning effect

Moment of force:

The turning effect of a force acting on a body about an axis is called the moment of force or torque.

The moment of a force(or torque) is equal to the product of the magnitude of the force and the perpendicular distance of the line of action of the force from the axis of rotation.

Moment of force about a point = Force    x      perpendicular distance of force from the point

Units of moment of force

The S.I unit of moment of force = newton meter ( this is abbreviated as N m)

The C.G .S unit is dyne-cm.

1 Nm =  $10^{7}$dyne cm
